Erastus Bingham, Jr., was born September 30, 1822 at St. Johnsburg (Concord), Vermont. his parents were Lucinda Gates and Erastus Bingham, Sr. They joined the Latter-day Saint Church in 1833, being among the first converts to Mormonism in Vermont. The family moved to Illinois, and when the exodus from Nauvoo occurred in the spring of 1846, and the main body of the Church moved to Iowa, Erastus, Jr., was called to go ahead and make roads and build bridges. Later his own family consisting of his wife, Olive Hovey Freeman, and their two young children journeyed westward to Council Bluffs, Iowa just in time to hear the call for a battalion of men. Erastus, Jr., joined Co. "B," his brother, Thomas, and his wife's brother, Elijah Freeman, all enlisted leaving their families in the care of their father.

Erastus Bingham, aged 83 years, died yesterday at 11 o?clock. Mr Bingham was a member of the Mormon faith the greater part of his life. He leaves a wife and a large family. In the short time he had lived in Mesa he had made many friends and the family has the sympathy of the whole community.
