Obituary for Marrietta Antoinette Correia
The Daily Oklahoman, Thursday, June 20, 1996
TAYLOR Marrietta Antoinette (Correia), 61, departed this life June 18, 1996, after a short but valiant fight against cancer. Marrietta was born May 4, 1935, in Binger, Ok. to Osborn J. and Frieda (Dieball) Correia, both of whom preceded her in death. She was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Classen High School in 1953. In high school, she established herself as an artist and tennis player of tremendous talent. She attended the University of Oklahoma on an art scholarship where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. While at O.U., she met and married Hugh R. Taylor, her loving and devoted husband for 41 1/2 years. During the next 22 years, Marrietta lived in various parts of the United States while her husband pursued a career in the U.S. Navy. During that time she gave birth to 4 wonderful children and began a career of her own as a florist. She owned flower shops and greenhouses in Virginia, Kansas, and California. In Los Angeles, following her husband's retirement from the Navy, Marrietta's floral talents took her along new career paths as a floral designer for movies and television. This led to yet another career as a Special Events Planner and Designer. Among the many projects on which she worked were the Academy Awards Governor's Ball, the Los Floristas Annual Ball, Thalian Society galas, and numerous conventions, galas and benefits. She was the floral designer in charge of providing the flowers for Lucille Ball's funeral. Her work was in demand by such famous event planners as John Daly and the late Arthur Simon. Before going into semi-retirement and returning to Oklahoma City to make their home, the Taylors lived in Roswell, N.M., where she operated an event center, The Galleria, and as owner of Designs by Marrietta, she designed and and decorated many special events including the last 6 Final Balls at the New Mexico Military Institute. Besides her husband, she is suvived by her 4 children, Cheryl Taylor and her husband, Jorgen Hansen of Port Washington, Wi, Sandra Aldern and her husband, Tom of Ramona, Ca, Deborah Dixon and her husband, Jack of Neodesha, Ks, and Hugh R. Taylor II and his wife, Tammy of Louisville, Co; and grandchildren, Dustin Taylor, Ashley Aldern, Heather and Matthew Dixon, and Lena Hansen; and a brother, John Correia of Roswell, N.M. Marrietta will always be remembered as a loving, caring, nurturing wife, mother and grandmother. Her love of music, theater, art, philosophy and flowers allowed her to bring beauty and happiness into the lives of not only her own family but thousands of people with whom she came in contact. She loved life and lived it to the fullest but always found time to help those in need and bring comfort to those in pain and grief. Though her talent, sense of humor, creativity and loving spirit will be missed by her family and her thousands of friends and associates, they know she will never die and her artistry with paints and flowers will live forever. God must have need of her decorating skills in heaven to have called her home so early in life. Her body will be cremated. Her ashes will later be joined by her husband's and, eventually, at long last, they will go to sea together. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 21, at the Bible Baptist Church in Neodesha, Ks. Because of her love of and work with flowers, floral arrangements may be sent to the church for the service. Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary will be in charge of the cremation. Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary, 13125 N. MacArthur 720-1439
